Opening the pool after winter: when and how

As soon as the calendar or the weather starts to show first signs of spring coming back, there´s also time to open the pool after winter. Five following easy steps describe when and how to start your pool in the spring.

1. WHEN TO OPEN THE POOL

A clear sign of the swimming season comeback is the water temperature. 10°C indicates the right time to start.

COMPASS TIP :

Do not wait for the hot spring weather. Temperature over 15°C provides conditions suitable for algae growth, which can get the pool opening process more complicated and expensive (it will need more chemicals and brushing).

The pool can be opened even if the temperature doesn´t reach 10°C, but only if your pool is not equipped with automatical pH measuring and chlorine dosing. The water monitoring sensors work only when the temperature reaches it´s minimum 10°C, otherwise they don´t respond.

2. POOL CLEANING

A pool, that was out of order through the winter, is drained under the nozzles and skimmer and the water may be dirty with fallen leaves and other debris. Brush the pool walls with sponge and detergent, rinse it with power washer and remove the debris with the skimmer net. If the water is too dirty, it needs to be drained completely or divert if from filtration system.

COMPASS TIP :

If draining the water completely, make sure to protect the pool from groundwater damage – the best way is to rely on specialist. The presence of groundwater was probably detected during the pool construction.

3. GET THE TECHNOLOGIES READY

Check all the hoses and sealings and attach the filtration, chemicals dosing, water heating, and other systems. If everything looks allright, launch the technologies and set them as usual. All the water should pass the filtration system approximately two times, depending to water temperature and pollution level.

COMPASS TIP :

Change the sand in sand filtration system once in 3-4 years. Sand grains get grinded in time and lose their cleaning power. This leads to insufficient water filtration and increases the chemical usage.

4. DON´T FORGET TO TREAT THE WATER

Fill the pool with water and treat it with the first disinfectant – shock pool chlorine, initially eliminating present microorganisms. Next day adjust the water hardness. In one week following the pool filling balance the water pH between 7,2-7,6.

COMPASS TIP :

Refilling the pool, use the tap water. It´s favorable hardness and chemical composition helps you to reduce the cost of water treatment.

THE POOL IS READY FOR SWIMMING

Hooray!
